I’ve been a long time fan of Sebadoh, Sentridoh and Lou Barlow in general ever since hearing The Freed Man in college. It kind of blew my mind and got me thinking more about recording and not necessarily worrying about fidelity so much. When I found this cassette at Used Kids, I was so stoked. I’ve listened to this tape so much, it’s probably not worth anything now (although, it actually is a collector’s piece at this point I guess) but I’d never sell it anyway. :) Hope you like it.

Broadcaster was a band I was in with Brian Freshour, Brett Ruland & Matt Duckworth in the 90’s. We made a full album but it was never properly released. This tape was made for me by Matt…it’s the only version of it I have and it’s not perfect. I’ve also included 3 extra songs that I found on 4-track tapes recently. Listening back to this stuff, I remember how creative and spontaneous we were and how much fun we had. At the same time, it was rough and tumultuous as well. Sorry about the quality; these cassettes are pretty old and have degraded significantly over the years.

Thom Lessner and I used to trade tapes and this is one that I from him pretty early on. If you’re not familiar with Thom, go to Dirty Franks right now…he did all the artwork inside the restaurant. Thom and I were never super close pals, but I like to think we had a kinship of sorts. I’ve always loved his songs because he writes in a literal, almost scripted dialog that relates to those who surround him, and he’s not afraid of humor and/or embarrassing topics. There’s lots of Columbus all-star guests on this as well like R.J. Krohn (RJD2) and Trevor Williams from Beano. Thom seems to be more focused on art these days but he’s so awesome at that too. When I listen to this tape, I miss the old days of the Crud House and all those folks. Also check out thomlessner.com to see what he’s up to lately.

Swirlies were a band that changed the way I listened to music. They became very important to me and I got the chance to see them live in Cincinnati in 1999 and picked up this tape at the show. I think this is self-released and one song is on a 7” that I have as well but it’s a different version. So really, only 2 and 1/2 songs here but still a great tape.

My love affair with Kicking Giant started with a Built To Spill cover of their song “She’s Real”. I began searching for their releases and got the “She’s Real” 7”, “Halo” CD, “Alien ID” CD and this little gem tape, “BoyFriend Girlfriend”. I bought it at a KG show in Dayton at a Darts hall. KG was Tae Won Yu and Rachel Carns. Tae also did a lot of prominent album artwork for Built To Spill and many others. For me, KG was the perfect blend of punk, pop and slacker songwriting and became a constant favorite of mine. KG cover Jonathan Richman’s “Summer Feeling” making this tape that much more awesome. Also recorded by Kramer at Noise NY 1990. This was distributed by K records but released under Loose records.

This is my first submission and this post will dictate the direction of this blog. I am trying to archive and share rare, old and one-of-a-kind cassettes that are in my possession. I have felt such joy and happiness from listening to these tapes and I hope you will too. I am putting up the music as 2 sides; just like the old tapes. Each post will have 2 files to download.
The Secret Stars eponymous 2nd cassette “9 songs. 1995.” It is one of my favorite tapes of all time and I’ve worn mine almost completely out so please excuse the quality, which I think is still excellent. The audio is mostly in one side which is how it was when I bought it new. This tape was on Shrimper (SHR60), hand/home dubbed by Dennis Callaci…he did the artwork too. TSS was Geoff Farina and Jodi Buonanno…more about them here: www.secretstars.com. Geoff was also in one of my favorite bands of all time, Karate, and released several solo albums which are also awesome. Enjoy.
